So when I checked the Nice homepage to see the activities for Bastille Day I saw that there was a parade and i was so excited! Naturally being from North America, I was expecting floats and costumes and candy and music and all that good stuff that makes parades so good. I was sadly disappointed when I woke up at 8:00 am to go down and see a couple military units the police and the firefighters march up and down the street a couple times and call it good. I was all, is that it? But you know, different countries, different customs. Yet another misleading adventure in Nice.

Ok, so this last weekend I went on a group excursion to Cannes which is located about 45 minutes out of Nice. It was beautiful there and it had the first sand beach that I’ve seen on this trip! I was so excited. We went on a hike up the hill and through the streets of old Cannes to the top of the look out. The view up there was AMAZING! So amazing in fact that I couldn’t capture it all in one picture, I had to take four. Then we took a bâteau (boat) to St. Margarite island where the fabled Man in the Iron Mask was apparently held captive. It was a beautiful trip spent with some fun new friends. My camera died about half way through but it was ok. More adventures on the way, it should be fun!

Yesterday I went to Villefranche, its a little mountainous area about ten minutes out of Downtown Nice by train. So far it was some of the most beautiful scenery that I’ve seen here on the Cote d’Azure. The shops were adorable and the people were very nice. We visited the old church (breathtaking, they post signs that request silence but with the atmosphere, you go silent anyways) and the old citadel which gave a great insight to the towns history. But sadly, the best part was the beach! Why? Because it was sand! No more rocks for me

So my apartment is situated in old town Nice about 10 blocks from the beach and the Mediterranean Sea. Its so BEAUTIFUL! Whenever I have some extra time or something, I just walk to the beach and lay in the sun. The swimming is amazing and the water is the perfect temperature; not too cold but not necessarily bath water. The only downfall is that the beach is comprised of rocks, not sand, pebbles about the size of a three-year-olds fist. Oh well, the swimming’s great and the sea is beautiful so rocks in the shoe is a small price to pay.

By mosquitoes not the french. My side of the building is facing still water or something because those damn insects have invaded my room! They’ve attacked my arms, legs, knees, neck, EVERYWHERE!!! I itch everywhere but I can’t scratch or I’ll end up with a bunch of scars. Obviously I could just close the window but it’s way too hot to even think about it so I’m left with a choice, bites or air circulation. Why does life have to be so hard?

veggie_head here, now that I have spent a couple days in Nice, so many changes in the culture have come to my attention. Of course the language is different and the cars and the atmosphere and all that good stuff but one of the surprising things for me was the keyboards for the local computers. Now that I’m sitting here trying to write this, its harder than you’d think. The Q is where the A should be and visa versa, the Z and the W switched places, the M is where the : should be and the : is where the comma usually is! Not to mention that now I have to use shift to use the period and the ! is where the period should be!
French keyboards are strange to me and its all very frustrating but I think that I’m getting used to it. Wish me luck!

For those who have gone through many busy US airports, you know how confusing they can be. In fact, I used to think that the seattle/tacoma airport was a little piece of hell incarnate. That all changed when I had a layover in the London/Heathrow airport. I have never been more confused in my life! Its just a big maze of random hallways, escalators, and shuttles, yet somehow I found my way. I guess you’d have to see it to know what I’m saying but still, if at all possible, avoid the London/Heathrow airport!

I have arrived! For my new readers, I am 20 year old college student taking classes in Nice, France.

In any case, the trip was a little taste of hell but I’m here now, I’ve started classes and settled in to my studio apartment in old town Nice. I’m staying on a floor with a bunch of students from New Jersey and last night we celebrated my arrival by checking out a couple of the local pubs and sharing a bottle or two of wine. The weekend is coming and more is sure to happen so stay tuned and I’ll get back to you on Monday!
