Be very careful how you spend your money. There is a big difference between what a person really wants and his or her real needs. Basic needs include adequate nutrition, hydration, shelter from the elements, and clothing. Some people think they need something when maybe in reality they don’t really need that thing after all. For instance, I had to make car payments my priority rather than buying more quilting books or other things. People have “other needs” also. Artists may need to have beauty around them and need to have freedom to create. A handyman needs a tool box full of tools to fix and/or create something new.
Reach out for opportunities to make money. Try what you can and give each item sufficient time. You know the saying: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Here are a few advantages that can happen when one has money beyond what it takes to fulfill their basic needs:
*Improve your living situation (rent a better apt,
remodel, buy a cabin or a house)but be careful not to go beyond your means.
* Planning skills. (preparing for the future, having a good working car, etc.) Save, economize, find creative solutions to problems. Think of how can I save money and do a job well: Read a book, watch a video, DVD, or take a class: cut my own hair, how to remodel a home or do simple repairs, paint the house, etc. Bulk and on sale buying, how to budget money, and cut down on expenses. Find out if your local library has that book you really want to read instead of buying one. Make good use of your time.
* Saving money by using coupons and have them handy when shopping. Use guarantees to replace mechanical items. Proper insurance policies to replace a vehicle can provide a real benefit.
* Make better choices. If a neighbor needs a cooking pot give them an old one that is still useable to keep instead of just letting them borrow yours. Properly take care of what you have by having means. Sometimes it takes just a little money to fix or repair something. For instance, my daughter found, after examining the clothes dryer that a small part costing less than one dollar would keep the door latched to make the dryer work.
* Research and invest. Buy fewer items that depreciate with time. A vehicle or mobile home generally goes down in value. Real Estate generally goes up in value when richer and/or more affluent people move in the neighborhood. It takes a bit of research to find out how to invest in stocks and savings bonds, and get interest on your money that is worth your time.
* Have time to do what you enjoy doing, keep life simple, and feel better about oneself. What’s that phrase? Do what you love and the money will follow. Find out what do well at and what you enjoy. Some job service agencies have tests that can help determine what profession one should choose. It takes time to create a business, invest, and save. Remember not everything you try will fit you. There are valuable lessons one can learn from mistakes but don’t be too hard on you. Be a doctor or whatever, traveling, join a choir, take a course, a class, or join a club.(Artist club, writing club, horse club, General Federation of Women’s Clubs or one that interests you).
A hobby is a good way to relax, direct extra energy, and make money. Sometimes one’s hobby may be a real benefit financially in some way. I once knew a lady who was good at painting and enjoyed it. One day her and her husband began a pottery business. Soon she was painting beautiful flowers and designs on the pottery. They started out simple with one kind of item. Soon they were making pottery sets and sending them all over the world.
Every day one’s choices have outcomes and consequences. Making good choices based on one’s basic needs is a step toward success. Learning economy, saving, and investing wisely helps create a better life. Finding a hobby that one enjoys and that contributes financially is on the road to success.
